If you turn down a quiet country lane off the R45, just before you hit the main artery of Huguenot Street, and strike southwest towards the formidable bulk of Franschhoek’s bordering mountains, you’ll arrive at an ornate gate embraced on both sides by impeccably cropped topiary shrubbery.
This is Leeu Estates, a glittering emerald in Leeu Collection’s constellation of luxury properties. Having recently achieved the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA)’s new 5-Star Premium status, Leeu Estates in Franschhoek has literally perfected perfection. And with its lofty position on the foothills of the Dassenberg Mountain, the estate offers views of valley, vineyard, and mountains that are as heart-rendingly beautiful as its manor house, restaurant, and accommodation’s interiors.
The Leeu Estates Offering
The flagship property of the Leeu Collection, Leeu Estates is home to a delectable smorgasbord of luxury suites, services, and amenities, including a spa, gym, events and meeting venue, art collection, and impeccably manicured gardens with bronze sculptures and installations by widely celebrated South African artists, such as Otto du Plessis, Deborah Bell, Angus Taylor, and Dylan Lewis. The founder of Leeu Collection, Analjit Singh, personally curated the collection, which can be appreciated on one of the estate’s garden and art tours.
For innovative and delicious French-inspired cuisine paired with fine South African vintages from the cellar, look no further than the newly opened flagship restaurant Le Chêne. The estate even boasts a wine cellar and tasting centre, courtesy of its partnership with Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines. Here, visitors (by appointment only) can sit down to an immersive, tutored wine tasting of Mullineux’s premium, handcrafted wines: wines that routinely score five out of five stars in the annual Platter’s Wine Guide.
Accommodation and Spa at Leeu Estates
Visitors to the five-star getaway of Leeu Estates can either stay in the 17-room country house retreat, each room and suite of which is individually styled and luxuriously appointed, or in one of the cottages located in heritage buildings. These spacious accommodations are elegantly decked out with bespoke furniture, wool-and-sisal carpets, and textured layers of linen, leather, wood, and stone in a calm colour palette.
There is an almost microscopic attention to detail paid in every quarter and state-of-the-art accoutrements throughout, from underfloor heating and rain showers to marble-clad en-suite bathrooms and heated towel rails. This is vastly complemented by the views out onto an embracing landscape of lush vineyards, gardens, and fynbos ablaze with jubilant colour and birdlife.
And just in case one needed further rest and relaxation, the Leeu Spa, tucked into the estate’s vineyards, has a team of expert therapists and a hedonistic menu of holistic spa treatments and authentic massages at guest’s disposal.
Flagship Restaurant Le Chêne
Meaning ‘the oak’ in French, Le Chêne is the brand-new flagship restaurant at Leeu Estates and is geared up to reinforce Franschhoek’s title as the Gourmet Capital of South Africa. Multiple award-winning chef Darren Badenhorst, also chef-patron of the much loved Le Coin Français, spearheads the kitchen at Le Chêne. His agenda is honouring the history of this French-steeped valley with French-inspired dishes that, made from fresh, locally grown ingredients, are as beautiful to behold as they are to tuck into.
The new restaurant is located in Leeu Estate’s artfully decorated and regal Manor House and is open for breakfast (07:00 to 10:30), lunch (12:00 to 14:30), and supper (19:00 to 20:30).
Defining the horizons of luxury
