Heritage Day, AKA “Braai Day”, is right around the corner, which means it’s time to don our rugby shirts, break out the braai tongs, and pull the Klippies out of the liquor cabinet. But who has time for dishes and smelling of fire smoke when the Cape Winelands are erupting with celebrations on this very special day of the South African calendar? Anura Vineyards’ Heritage Day Edition of “Run the Vines”
For the third time, the “Run the Vines” Trail Run will take place at the majestic Anura Wine Estate near Klapmuts. Positioned on the foothills of the Simonsberg Mountains, Anura boasts wide variety of soils, microclimates and, consequently, a fine repertoire of wines, including some uncommon cultivars. With the splendid restaurant and Wagon Trail Brewery, you can be sure that National Braai Day will be a special one. A braai menu will be on offer and there will be live music to entertain you while you relax after your run.

Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate
Listen to live music, feast on braai platters, enjoy delicious wine, and let the kids play a round of Pirate Adventure Golf or enjoy the fun courtyard games whilst you relax on the Saturday before Heritage Day. Other activities to do at Benguela Cove include a one-hour guided tour around their state-of-the-art gravity fed wine cellar; an informative vineyard safari around the magnificent 200-hectare wine estate, nature reserve, Bot River Lagoon, and Palmiet Mountains; and wine tastings and pairings.

Boschendal Wine Estate Heritage Day Market
This year, Boschendal is shaking things up a little and throwing a market-style event set to entertain all. Guests can eat from multiple food stands showcasing the farm’s award winning produce. These delicious plates will be served from 13:00 to 15:00. Seating options will also be varied but unassigned: choose to join the long table, sit at smaller tables, or stretch out on bean bags on the grass. There will also be a variety of live musical performances and kids can look forward to a puppet show, face painting (included in the ticket price), and pony rides.

Bosman Hermanus Traditional Braai
Celebrate your “South African-ness” with a traditional braai at Bosman Hermanus on Heritage Day. The day begins with a refreshing walk through the fynbos, stopping en route to taste wines and admire the spectacular views. The trail ends at the Frame House, where a long and lovely lunch of BBQ rooibos marinated pork ribs, spicy chicken wings, traditional “braai broodjies”, Karoo loin chops, and a medley of fresh, delicious salads and roast vegetables will be served.

Jordan Wine Estate 3-Course Heritage Menu
Chef Thys of Jordan Wine Estate has designed three special dishes that can be enjoyed individually or as part of a set menu for R280 per person this Heritage Day at Jordan Wine Estate. Start with a biltong and goats cheese salad with rocket, tomato confit, and grilled baby marrow followed by signature oak smoked pork belly ribs in pineapple marinade, and then peppermint crisp tart.
Lanzerac Wine Estate, Heritage Day Event
Lanzerac Estate will host a cultural experience showcasing a wide assortment of unique dishes cooked over open flames in celebration of national “braai day.” In true tradition, you will be welcomed with a glass of Lanzerac MCC and can spend the day savouring tapas-style fare and slow roasted gourmet style pub plates prepared by the Lanzerac chefs. Guests can also enjoy Lanzerac wines in the outdoor wine lounge or artisanal gin from the pop-up bar in the Governors Hall. There will be a kid’s station and live music.
Additionally, on the evening of the 23rd and 24th September, Lanzerac Hotel & Spa will be offering a luxurious package for guests wishing to attend the event: a one-night stay, three-course dinner, wine tasting, and two tickets to the Heritage Day festivities for only R6,000 per couple per night.

Start off your Heritage Day celebration with a 5 km, 10 km, or 15 km trail run through the pristine Neethlingshof Estate. Gravel road, jeep track, and elevation that takes you to spectacular views, run through beautiful vines and incredible forest, over the dam and into the bush. Its real trail offering real challenges, real beauty, and – to all who finish – medals and a free wine tasting! To end things off, braais will be lit and amazing platters will be on sale.
