First Thursdays: August Edition

On the first Thursday of every month, Cape Town’s cultural hubs, art galleries, and museums throw open their doors to the public (usually with admission fees waived) and stay open until 21:00, if not later. The idea is to encourage locals and visitors to experience Cape Town’s exceptional art scene (events, performances, exhibits) by foot.

First Thursday Night Market at Botanik

Step into a forestry of fashion, food, and festivities at the Botanik Social House Night Markets every First Thursday through Winter 2019. The market hosts a collection of Cape Town and South Africa’s most sought-after trending retail vendors with Tropical House and Ibiza sunset lounge music DJ performances throughout the evening. Doors open at 6pm, entrance is free, and each guest will receive a complimentary Belvedere cocktail upon arrival.

Kinky Boots at the Fugard Theatre

The Fugard Theatre present a brand new, original production of the smash-hit musical Kinky Boots, a tale of transformation and love in the most unlikely of circumstances. The play is inspired by true events and features a Tony-winning score by Cyndi Lauper.

Pop Up Extravaganza at the Alphen Boutique

The Pop-Up Emporium hosts the shopping extravaganza of the season: an exclusive designer market with over 60 vendors at the Alphen Boutique Hotel. A variety of clothing, jewellery, handbags, swimsuits, kiddies clothes and accessories, cosmetics, skincare, and more. The first 1000 attendees receive a complimentary cocktail and goodie bag.

Paarl Jam Festival

Held every year in August, thousands of visitors from all over the world flock to the town of Paarl to enjoy the interschools rugby matches. This year, Mojo Events has added a two-day outdoor music festival, Paarl Jam, featuring some of South Africa’s biggest names in music such as Night Sky Zombies, Noblemen, BRYNN, The Kiffness, Prime Circle, Francois van Coke, and Springbok Nude Girls. The festival also includes entertainment for the whole family, coupled with food, cold beer on tap, local wines, and live streaming of the interschool fixtures.

Jazz & Fondue at Delheim Wine Estate

This winter, guests are invited to Delheim’s romantic downstairs wine tasting cellar for lunchtime concerts featuring a symphony of cheese and wine from the celebrated Stellenbosch winery, served alongside a musical programme of the Cape Town Music Academy and Jazz in the Native Yards.

Durbanville Hills Winter of Wander

Burn the Floor SA Tour: Fire in the Ballroom

Burn the Floor is a live dance show that has, since 1997, performed in over 130 countries worldwide, including on Broadway in New York City and the West End in London. Women’s Month Paint and Sip at Venue D’Aria

Germany’s Youth Orchestra Presented by The CPO and MIAGI

Alexander Shelley is bringing the German National Youth Orchestra, the Bundesjugendorchester (BJO) on tour to South Africa to mark their 50th anniversary. Music director of Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra and Principal Associate Conductor of London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Shelley works regularly with the leading orchestras of Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australasia. The concert is being presented by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) in collaboration with MIAGI (Music is a Great Investment) and features award-winning singer songwriter Msaki, known for her soulful rhythms and sounds.

The veld it is awakening after a long, dry spell and a green sheen is already covering the landscape – it’s time for the annual blooming of the Cape wildflower and, in celebration, the Clanwilliam Wildflower Society will be returning with its annual show. The theme for this year is harmony. Community members of Clanwilliam volunteer their time to showcase 350 to 400 wildflower species from the largest Aloe to the smallest Cyanella alba. Artichoke Festival 2019 – Ayama Slent Farm

Following a sell-out launch last year, the Artichoke Festival is back featuring a live Italian band, painting exhibits, prizes and raffles, and a market selling locally made salamis, cheeses, wines, gins, and craft beers. Tickets include a full four-course lunch and sweet treat, all with artichokes as the featured ingredient. Italian chefs prepare these dishes, with the added opportunity to taste and purchase Vermentino wine made on the farm, a first in South Africa.
