The Constantia restaurant scene gained a new all-day eatery in March, when contemporary Botanicum Café & Grill opened its doors, serving seasonal modern European dishes using the best Cape produce.
Personally managed by co-founder and sommelier Marc Botes, Botanicum conveys a sense of place, bringing the leafy surrounds of High Constantia inside with beautifully designed finishes, the interior epitomises simplicity and sophistication, and its menu follows suit.
“What we offer is unpretentious, there’s a deliberately informal, social atmosphere in the room,” said Botes. “Our menu is centred around sustainable, seasonal produce, and our ever-changing wine list aims to share wines from smaller artisanal producers.” Botanicum is a meeting point where regulars can visit several times a week with family and friends for informal everyday affairs, or to celebrate those more special occasions.
Botes discovered his passion for wine almost two decades ago while working for a Constantia vineyard. Since then, he has honed his wine knowledge both locally and abroad. In 2004, while studying with the Court of Master Sommeliers, Botes ran the wine portfolio for two of celebrity chef Gordons Ramsay’s London restaurants, before joining one of the godfathers of London’s culinary renaissance, acclaimed French chef Pierre Koffmann, as general manager and sommelier for the opening of Koffmann’s.
Botes and wife Amy have enjoyed a successful run in the restaurant industry after setting up Chalk & Cork in Kloof Street and partnering with Devil’s Peak Taproom.
Now Botanicum brings Botes full circle, back to Constantia where it all started, where he is showcasing the best seasonal produce and his passion for off the beaten track, terroir-driven wines.
As the restaurant transitions from day to night, a highlight is their grills, cooked in a charcoal oven, with daily cuts sourced from local ethical butchers. When it comes to fish, Botanicum partners with Abalobi and together champion diverse, responsibly sourced, low impact and locally caught fish. If its pizza you’re after, their Neapolitan pizzas will transport you to the boot of Italy.
“We are both a food and a wine destination, offering local Constantia wines alongside some of the Cape’s best new wave counterparts from surrounding regions.”
