City life has its perks, but if you find yourself dreaming of mountain views and true tranquillity in favour of traffic and deadlines, it might be time you took a trip to Palmietvlei Farm near Wolseley.
The working blueberry and pear farm is just an hour and 20-minute drive from Cape Town, so it makes an easy weekend trip. Load up your dogs for this adventure, because they are more than welcome to stay with you. If you can, take your time getting to the farm because you won’t want to miss the string of award-winning wine estates in the area, as well as some great restaurants and sweet farm stalls along the way.
The Riverstone House
If you’re travelling with a group or want some space all to yourself, the 350sqm Riverstone House is ideal. It’s located in what was once a pear orchard and is surrounded by the farm’s blueberry fields on the banks of the seasonal Breede River. This spot is really lovely for a big family or group of friends because it sleeps 10 with 2 double rooms and 2 twin rooms (with extra day beds) — the dogs and kids will love the spacious garden too. The patio is perfect for outdoor dining in summer, while the lounge, which is equipped with a wood burning stove, is a cosy spot in the cooler months.
The house is a stones throw away from the Breede River, a perfect spot for a stroll, a swim, or seasonal, sustainable fishing.
If your group is a little smaller, it’s well worth visiting Riverstone’s FamTin. A converted container, the space is super modern, eco-friendly and quirky. Ideal for four guests, the unique space is situated in a beautiful spot on the edge of the farm dam, boasting views of the Mosterthoek mountain and the Witzenberg valley. There are 2 bedrooms each with their own ensuite bathroom.
Both of the units are beautifully decorated and thoughtfully equipped, so although the setting is rural, guests can enjoy a little luxury. You certainly won’t need to compromise when it comes to creature comforts on this farm — think fine white linens, all the amenities you might need to stay comfy, and beautiful finishes like a Victorian slipper bath and a private star-gazing outdoor shower.
If you’re anything else and struggle with the idea of parting with your pooch, then this location is the ultimate getaway for you and yours. There are 3 dams on the property, perfect for a mid-morning or afternoon dip, and if your dogs love swimming, well, it’s a match made in heaven.
The team at The Riverstone House also offer pet sitting services if you’d like to pop out for an evening dinner in the area.
Oh, and on your arrival, they even welcome your dogs with a pack of dog treats left on the counter along with a ‘welcome’ letter.
Be sure to book ahead if you would like a tour of the farm’s shed where you can see produce like berries and pears being packed, or simply enjoy the endless views and open spaces.
Whether for a summer break or a cosy winter getaway, this destination sure does have it all.
