Volkswagen Touareg

Volkswagen’s new Touareg does not disappoint.

Volkswagen’s Big Friendly Giant, the marvellous Touareg, is back at it again. This year we saw a facelift and several other improvements on this much-loved model.

The Face

Since the Touareg first launched back in 2002 with the first-generation model, we have been mesmerised by its sheer size, as well as all the other features it brings to the table, both from an aesthetics and performance point of view. Sixteen years down the line, Volkswagen is still captivating our minds — the front grille on the third-generation model has been extended to create a full face that blends into the headlights; the smooth lines stretch from front to back to create a much sportier look, similar to the Audi Q family; and LED technology has been used for the taillight clusters.

With a formidable 190kW delivered by the V6 TDI engine, drivers are in for a treat. The aluminium-steel body weighs in at 106kg less than its predecessor, with an additional 113 litres of luggage space.

The Technology

The new Touareg takes the crown when it comes to technological advancement — VW has revealed its fully digitalised ‘innovision cockpit’ for the first time in this model. The digital cockpit has been merged with the Discover Premium infotainment system, giving us, in their words, ‘the blueprint for tomorrow’s digital interior today’. The fully digitalised system brings together all the information, communication and entertainment aspects of the car, all in one digital operating system with barely any traditional buttons or switches.

The Interior

The interior reflects deluxe refinement at its best. The glass covered ‘innovision cockpit’ coupled with aluminium and chrome finishes throughout the cabin creates an environment where you feel right at home, in the lap of luxury. The Touareg also houses the largest panoramic sliding roof within the VW family — a great feature for scenic road trips.

Bank on it

The new Touareg comes in two options, each with the same engine and just a few extra bells and whistles differentiating them. Choose between the 3.0l V6 TDI 190kW Luxury and the 3.0 V6 TDI 190kW Executive, with the latter topping the price scale at R1 088 200.

The new Touareg comes standard with a 5 year/100 000km maintenance plan, three year/120 000km warranty, 12-year anti-corrosion warranty and space saver spare wheel. The service interval is 15 000km.
