The Lawns at The Roundhouse in Camps Bay has recently opened its “doors” after a major revamp just in time for summer and the beautiful weather the season typically brings to the Cape peninsula. From its lofty vantage point on the steep slopes of Lion’s Head in the Table Mountain National Park, The Lawns boasts astounding views of Camps Bay, the Twelve Apostles mountain range, and the Atlantic Ocean. In other words, it’s a truly spectacular spot in which to relax, soak up a bit of sun and wine or cocktails, enjoy a good meal, and admire Cape Town’s blessed natural heritage!
A rabbit warren of wondrous spaces
The Lawns at The Roundhouse spills down over a cascading series of grassy tiers, offering visitors a plethora of open spaces for a little rest, recreation, and sustenance. Here, there is no shortage of beautiful spots and their subtle separation from each other makes it a sort of rabbit warren that’s rather enchanting to explore. There are both sun-drenched and shaded grassy patches; tables to sit at, bean bags to collapse into, and soft grass for picnics; there are treed verandas for leisurely lunches and a “secret sunset deck” – a secluded and tucked-away venue for private parties, complete with its very own bar.
Each space has a unique charm and allure, whether it’s the feeling of being totally embraced by greenery, sitting under 300-year old pomegranate trees, or breath-taking sunset views. What they have in common, however, is that they have been planned and laid out to take full advantage of their dramatic mountainside location and sweeping ocean views.
On the menu
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, The Lawns is open all day with a rather simple yet satisfying menu of burgers, seafood, pizza (banting-friendly bases available), cheese and charcuterie platters, and other reliable favourites. They also offer picnics, which is an excellent option for disappearing into the secluded shade and dining in peace. This place is about laid back dining in a stunning outdoor setting that’s both child and dog friendly and, suitably, the menu is geared to satisfy, not blow your socks off with its innovative, out-the-box thinking. If you’re after that, you’ll find Chef Luke Dale Roberts’ Salsify at The Roundhouse a far more suitable venue.
The drinks menu is even more extensive and satisfying than the food menu: craft beers, creative cocktails, the usual array of mixers, and an accessible and affordable wine selection…whatever your preference of summertime beverage, you’ll find it here.
