John Pace creates work that is inspired by our country — from its people to its shores — and that is relevant and refreshing, in a medium and style that is uniquely her own.
John Pace has worked in the design and advertising industry for the last 30 years and currently works as the Creative Director at the Cape Town-based agency At Pace. He is also an award-winning artist and was the winner of the Sanlam Portrait Award in 2015 for the portrait of his own son, Jack. He studied Fine Art and Graphic Design at the Durban Technical College, before beginning his successful career in advertising. He paints and draws in his spare time and has exhibited his work locally.
John has worked with printmaking as well as monochromatic drawing, with a focus on animal subjects. His latest work includes portraits of human subjects in the medium of oil on canvas. His collection titled Looking at You, depicts ordinary people with extraordinary lives — among his subjects are a pig farmer, chicken seller, and butcher man. His oil paintings, which are accessible and relatable, work by lifting the subjects above the everyday often endowing them with a heroic aspect.
