With more than five new model launches, 2018 has been a super busy and successful year for Lexus.
Expanding their frontiers from land to sea, Lexus has given us sporty and sophisticated rides, as well as a magnificent yacht, the Lexus LY 650, all in one year. And now, the model that’s pulling at our heartstrings is the all-new Lexus LS 500. Characterised by poise, sophistication, class, speed, and power, it’s truly something to behold.
The LS 500 is the fifth generation of its kind. But, with all the bells and whistles, it’s truly a modern-day marvel. From an exterior point of view, it’s as bold as always. As much as the LS is a sedan, it has an elegant coupe-like feel to it. This is achieved with an efficient aerodynamic design and sleek, lower lines coupled with a few extra design elements. The spindle grille for example — which might I add, consists of 5 000 individual surfaces that took highly qualified CAD designers several months to produce — was finished off by hand to add further attention to detail. Furthermore, you are greeted with a design line that extends from the front to the rear of the car, giving an impression of a performance vehicle, which hugs the tar and becomes one with the road.
All your senses are awoken once you step into the new LS. From touch to sight, you are engulfed in luxury. Much of the inspiration was drawn from traditional Japanese design techniques, such as the subtle ambient lighting. This design element was incorporated in the armrest that lights up, creating an illusion that it’s floating next to the door panels. Other design fundamentals include wood trimmings with detailed grain patters, while the leather seats are, as always, a treat — soft and supple, with meticulous stitch work to round them off.
The new steering wheel sports a sleek three-spoke design, and is smaller in diameter from its predecessor, providing the ideal grip for the driver. There are two interior colour options — crimson and black, and just black. When it comes to wood finishes, you can choose between Art Wood Organic or Herringbone. The infotainment system is top of the range, nestled in an impressive 12.3inch multimedia screen.
When you are packing 310kW and 600Nm of torque, you must put it somewhere awesome. Lexus bundled it up in an impressive 3.5l V6 engine. This twin-turbo engine has been designed especially for the new LS, delivering power and excellent fuel consumption simultaneously. 0 to 100km/h is achieved in just five seconds. This is also the first time a 10-speed automatic transmission has been coupled with a luxury sedan. The LS has an estimated fuel consumption of 9.5l per 100km, making it a formidable contender in its range.
The Price Tag
As with all good things in life, there is a price tag attached to the LS 500, clocking in at R2 141 400.00. A temporary pinch will result in your pleasure that the LS will forever embed in you. The LS 500 comes with a seven year/105 000km warranty with a full maintenance plan.
