With a love for our continent’s people and landscapes, three artists create work that reflects the diversity of our environment. Each with a distinct style, Alex Marmarellis, Lesley Charnock, and Grace Kotze, all produce pieces that are inspired by everyday South African scenes.
Born in Cape Town, Alex Marmarellis studied Graphic Design, Fine Art, and Sculpture at the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg, as well as Graphic Design and Art Direction at the AAA School of Advertising in Cape Town. While he has worked in a wide range of professions, from carpentry to furniture design and marketing, Alex returned to his love of art in 2010 when he began painting again.
With a passion for photography, Alex often produces work from his own reference material. In fact, he carries his camera with him at all times and is always on the lookout for fresh inspiration. Alex creates pieces inspired by his environment and the people in his life — his scenes of Camps Bay Beach, for example, are realistic impressions of one of Cape Town’s best-loved spots.
