Nelson Mandela “100 Moments in Time” Exhibit

As the world celebrates Madiba’s 100th birthday in July 2018, hosts a stunning photo exhibition on the legendary photojournalist Peter Magubane’s 100 best photos of Nelson Mandela. The exhibition features images of Mandela’s life as he became an activist, after his release from prison, during his election campaign, and personal moments all captured by his personal photographer Peter Magubane.

Contemporary African Art Exhibit

From the end of July to October, Material Gains will be showcasing more than 50 works from Spier’s diverse collection of contemporary art at the Stellenbosch University Museum. The pieces are by emerging and established artists working across the African continent, in countries including South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Congo, and Nigeria. As the museum celebrates 100 years by looking forward, this exhibition’s artworks, when viewed collectively, represent and celebrate the “material gains” that have positively impacted the stability and sustainability of Africa’s visual arts.

Spier Material Gains50 Shades of Fairytales

This non-political(ly correct) whimsical and quirky song revue depicts the journey of two women, both played by Titilayo Adedokun, who evolve through their personal experiences of love, its challenges, and its consequences. It’s a collection of witty and thought-provoking songs that will leave you laughing, crying, and identifying with the characters. Alexander Bar & Café provides a charming and intimate theatre setting with a downstairs bar that will send you home [classy drunk] in an Uber.

Boschendal Friday Night Market

Every Friday night (18:00 to 21:00) this spring, the historic Boschendal wine estate will be transforming its gorgeous, oak-lined Werf area into a market. Here, visitors can buy fresh farm produce, grown in Boschendal’s very own backyard, peruse the food stalls, indulge in delicious artisanal creations, and enjoy the live music on offer. Boschendal is one of the Cape winelands’ most beautiful wine estates with its sprawling lawns, towering oak trees, manicured gardens, and a pervasive and enchanting air of history.

Diemersfontein’s Pinotage on Tap Festival

It’s every wine-lover’s ultimate fantasy: a festival in which the wine flows freely from the barrel tap. Well, fantasize no more because on Saturday 1st September, the Diemersfontein Wine Estate in Wellington will spin reality from revelry with the 16th instalment of its epically popular “Pinotage On Tap” festival. Bot River Spring Weekend 2018

Food, wine, music, and entertainment – for children too – will be aplenty at this year’s Bot River Spring Weekend, which takes place on the first official weekend of spring. Expect an orchestra of superb activities all hosted by various farms and wineries around the Overberg, each celebrating the dispatch of winter with their own unique and bull-inspired themes. There will also be a Bull Race (without the bovid): a scavenger hunt for grown-ups required to complete challenges prompted by a mobile phone app. Only 40 people can participate in the game, so don’t wait to book your place!

The Institute for Creative Arts (ICA) is an interdisciplinary institute located in the University of Cape Town’s Humanities Faculty. The ICA Live Art Festival is an annual celebration that’s designed to challenge and extend the public’s experience of live art in a non-commercial environment, as well as to make accessible the work of visual and performing artists who explore new forms, break boundaries, flout aesthetic conventions, tackle controversy, confront audiences, and experiment with perceptions.

Open Book Comics Fest 2018

The vastly popular Comics Fest segment of the annual Open Book Festival (5th – 9th September) offers fans, geeks, and creatives from both domestic and foreign shores the opportunity to meet, engage, network, and learn from some of the country’s and world’s most talented cartoonists and comic book artists. Thanks to Cape Town’s fantastic coffee culture, Dirtopia (an outdoor, off-road event company) has decided to host a “Coffee & Crafts Market” at Delvera Farm in Stellenbosch. The day kicks off with an optional 5 km and 10 km Fun Trail Run, after which you can get your daily fix, try something different, and/or grab a scrumptious bite at the Dirtopia Café whilst browsing the various craft stalls. There will also be live music, so grab an outdoor seat or bring a picnic blanket and sit on the lawns overlooking the picturesque farm. For families with little ones, there will be outdoor games, a jumping castle, and a kiddies menu option available.

Earthdance 2018

The Sanlam Cape Marathon

The annual Sanlam Cape Marathon, the only IAAF Gold Label-status marathon on the continent, is one of the world’s must-run marathons, attracting throngs of locals and internationals to take on this competitive, yet astoundingly beautiful route around Cape Town. The festival also includes a 12 km and 22 km Peace Trail Run, a 5 km Peace Fun Run/Walk and a 10 km Peace Run. Cape Town Opera presents Maria Stuarda

Royal intrigues explode onto stage as Donizetti dramatizes the fatal conflict between two Tudor Queens, Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots, bitter rivals both for the throne and for the love of Robert Leicester. Spectacular singing and spine-tingling confrontations take the focus in Matthew Wild’s minimalist staging, premiered to great acclaim in 2015 at the Artscape Opera House.

Violina Anguelov and Noluvuyiso Mpofu return to repeat their powerful portrayals of the conflicted monarchs, with Kamal Khan once again leading the cast, the Cape Town Opera Chorus, and Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra in an inspired reading of Donizetti’s masterful score.
