We know the Jimny, the SX4, the Vitara, all favourites, and now in the line-up, we have the Ignis. A pocket rocket who doesn’t share the stage with anyone.
This ‘mini’ mini-crossover or ‘ultra-compact’ crossover as they call it, hit our shores middle last year, and the hype has yet to die down. Not only did the Ignis get nominated for a ‘Car of the Year’ award it also won within its nominated category of ‘Best Budget Car’, but it also went on to win the overall Drive 360 Award for 2017.
Honey, I shrunk the car
This Ignis is cute. It excites you from the get-go. Calling the Ignis a mini or ultra-compact SUV is no understatement. It literally looks like someone took a high-end all-terrain SUV and shrunk it. The Ignis has all the characteristics and presence to make it clear that it isn’t just a compact car, it’s a compact crossover and one to be reckoned with. Protruding wheel arches, wide tracks, raised body, roof racks, she has it all.
Inside, an uncluttered approach
The cabin is clean and roomier than expected. The modern ambience in the Ignis is created with a two-tone colour approach of black and white, creating a more youthful presence. The exterior colour is mirrored in the interior door panels. The instrument panel is also designed with no additional clutter to give it a much smarter feel. The steering wheel is tilt-adjustable with multifunction controls for the entertainment system.
Not only does the Ignis look the part, it most definitely plays it as well. This car is perfect for in-town meandering and can most certainly venture off-road (within its class), too. All models in the line-up are powered with a 1.2l 4-cylinder engine. Weighing in well under a ton, the 61Kw that it kicks out at 6 000 rpm delivers a powerful punch. There is about a second and a half difference between the manual and the automatic from an acceleration point of view. The manual hits 0-100km/h in a formidable 11,6sec whereas the auto transmission does the same in 13sec. Top speed on the manual clocks in at 165km/h and 155km/h on the auto.
All of this at a starting price of only R171 900 for the 1.2 GL 5MT and a cool R206 900 for the 1.2 GLX 5AMT you are getting so much more than what you pay for. Couple this with a 3 year/100 000km warranty plus a 2 year/30 000km service plan and you’re good to go!
On a side note: I loved their UK advert so much, just have to share it 😊 enjoy!
