The iconic Ritz Hotel reopens its doors after a multi-million Rand makeover and it’s more spectacular than ever.
The Ritz is a world-renowned name in (and practically a synonym for) luxury hotel accommodation and fine dining. In Cape Town, The Ritz Hotel occupies a prime location on the Atlantic Seaboard, affording guests and visitors astonishing views of the Cape’s mountains, the ocean-hugging suburbs of Sea Point and Green Point, the Atlantic Ocean, and the odd visiting whale.
Rearing up from the foothills of Lion’s Head to a height of 23 floors, this sleek building with its modern aesthetic has just spent the past year undergoing a multi-million Rand makeover during which it was totally gutted and refurbished. And in December 2017, The Ritz Hotel in Sea Point reopened its doors to accept the influx of Cape Town tourists and locals looking to spend the festive season in relaxed style.
Décor and aesthetics
The Ritz’ recent facelift comes 45 years after its original build in the 1970’s and, according to Marketing Manager Lisa Carey, was a much-needed rejuvenation. Now, this iconic hotel has a fresh, contemporary style that pivots on a seductive, black palette, highlighted with elements of gold and smoky mirrored surfaces, as well as some fun and whimsical embellishments, such as the neon lights behind the reception desk and the fabulous Martinique banana leaf wallpaper, which was originally designed for the Beverley Hills Hotel in Los Angeles and had to be specially imported.
The hotel’s accommodations are super sophisticated and corporate-chic with a sultry black design theme with crisp white linens. Every room has large windows that allow the sweeping ocean views and natural light to stream in. Some special amenities for hotel guests include unlimited complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi, 24-hour in-room dining, a mini bar, and room safe.
“Top of the Ritz” Revolving Restaurant
The Ritz’ crowning glory (literally) is her revolving restaurant, a perennial favourite of Capetonians wishing to dine in fine style against a spectacular backdrop of glittering city lights and ocean moonlight reflections. Here, guests can embark upon a seven-course fine dining experience, while steeping in the intimate ambience and the sophisticated and luxurious surroundings.
A very recent addition is a champagne and cognac bar and lounge: the perfect venue for an after-work glass or three of champagne or to enjoy an aperitif prior to being escorted into the revolving restaurant (by reservation only) for the evening’s main attraction.
CASA Restaurant & Cabanas
For a more laid-back dining experience, there’s CASA, a beautiful Miami resort-style restaurant that overlooks the sunbathed pool deck. Here, guests can lounge about in the private, shaded cabanas, indulge in all-day sushi and pizza, and order real French champagne or an equally impressive local MCC from the fabulous champagne bar.
The glamorous pool deck also features plentiful poolside loungers, a saltwater pool, and, for families, a supervised shaded play area with enough toys and activities to keep the kids occupied for hours. On Sundays, CASA throws a spectacular brunch for hotel and walk-in guests, with the sexy soundtrack provided by a DJ. And, of course, breakfast buffet at CASA is a Monday to Sunday affair.
A venue for all visitors
“We want The Ritz to become a daytime venue for leisure and business, as much as an overnight luxury accommodation for visitors and tourists.” ~ Marketing Manager, Lisa Carey.
The Ritz carries a well-deserved reputation for having luxuriously appointed rooms and for serving up fine dining 23 floors up in its revolving restaurant. However, unlike many 5-star hotels, walk-in day visitors are very welcome here. Also, with its comfortable and elegant conference rooms, on-point facilities and amenities (Wi-Fi, catering, etc.), The Ritz offers the perfect setting to impress clients, treat employees, and conduct business in style.
And so, from her impressive white marble entrance with towering gold palms to her revolving restaurant crown, The Ritz Hotel has been reimagined and realised and now, her sterling legacy can proudly continue for decades.
