Multi-Instrumental Folk-Pop Duo Bottomless Coffee Band has steadily been making waves in the SA Music Industry and fans will be delighted with the news that their second full length album  “Anthelia” is being released in February 2018. The band takes a more flavored turn with this new offering and the album consists of 11 brand new songs: 9 English and 2 Afrikaans tracks. Lourens and Esté Rabé of BCB says that the aim was to make a diverse album, while maintaining the ethos of the band. The sound is a combination of folk-pop and rock with hints of classical tones. They have even included one or two surprises for Afrikaans fans.  This album will make you dance, smile, cry and sing along, all in the song-journey of one couple`s experience of life.

The first Afrikaans single “Ek sal Wag” was released on 6 February 2018. Lourens says that although they have performed only in English up to now, it was a natural progression to also make music in their mother tongue language, Afrikaans. Esté tells the story of how the song originated:“On our first international tour in 2016, we visited Denmark Street in London. This legendary street consists mainly of music shops and a couple of coffee shops.  Lourens and I have different capacities for shopping.  Ironically, he lasts way longer than I do, especially in a music shop.  I decided to wait for him in a coffee shop in Denmark street while he was still testing out guitars.  The shop had no wifi and I was forced to simply take in my surroundings.

As I was sitting at the window counter I noticed on the outside of the window sat another girl at one of the sidewalk tables.  If the window wasn’t there, we would’ve been sitting uncomfortably close to one another for two strangers, but because of this window, we were separated… Right there and then I got the inspiration for this song. Windows grow between us and many things in our lives (often between the people closest to us) – separating us without us even noticing. We are close to one another, but we do not communicate anymore.  This song is about waiting for those windows to melt away again; waiting for his / her heart to return to you. This song was initially written and recorded in English and then I translated it to Afrikaans. The English version will be released too.”

BCB have played an average of 150 shows per year since the release of their debut album “Room With A View” in 2015. They embarked on numerous tours reaching as far as Namibia, Belgium, The Netherlands and the UK. Lourens says: “Both Esté and I come from conservative families: you have to go to school, study after school and get a good job so that you can marry and look after your family. We do agree that this is a good foundation, but we also feel that life can be so much more. Two years ago, both of us left our corporate jobs to pursue our dream of making music together. We wanted to travel the world and meet and inspire people – and be inspired. We cannot believe how far we have come; we are living the dream and we couldn’t be happier.”

The album was recorded at Bellville Studios with legendary SA Music producer, Theo Crous, Esté says Working with Theo Crous was a phenomenal experience for us and we managed to complete the album over the course of 6 months. Although the essence of BCB is still prevalent in the new material, the songs have taken a more mature turn.

The name, “Anthelia”, is inspired by the title track that captures the essence of what the album has to say.  It means: “The ability to see angels”.  The duo translates this into their own interpretation: “The ability to see beauty in everything and everyone around us.”
