Between Bobby van Jaarsveld’s concert on the 27th of December and the phenomenally popular Langebaan to Saldanha Downwind Dash on 27 January, there is loads going on in Langebaan at this time of the year!
Whether you want to join one of the many New Year’s parties, say goodbye to 2017 with friends on the beach, or toast 2018 on your balcony, add a view of the Langebaan Lagoon and you’ll have memories for a lifetime.
And when it comes to fun in the sun, the waters around Langebaan offer endless summer fun for everyone – get your wings and learn to kite surf or SUP (stand-up paddle-boarding), enjoy a sundowner cruise, paddle, kayak, fish, sail… there are so many options.
Should you tire of watersports, there’s outstanding golf at the 18-hole Gary Player Black Knight course at the Langebaan Country Estate. Actually, golf is just one of the activities offered at this magnificent estate. Want to get going on those get-fit New Year’s resolutions? Every Saturday there’s a free, go-at-your-own-pace parkrun. Ideal for those starting 2018 with good intentions as well as runners who are already fit and pushing themselves to their next goal. There’s a spa if you just want to relax, but there are also great mountain-bike trails (watch out for the springbuck!) on the estate and at the nearby West Coast National Park. Swimming, bowls, netball, a mashie course… And for the kids there’s a games centre, foot golf and pro putt!
What accommodation type should you go for when visiting Langebaan? Self-catering accommodation probably gives the greatest freedom. Better still make your reservations where you have a choice of self-catering and restaurant options. Again, the Langebaan Country Estate is a great choice. It offers beautifully appointed self-catering units of varying sizes, and a selection of restaurants should you prefer a holiday from cooking!
The chef at Horizon restaurant offers a specific themed menu every Wednesday (for example, 27 December is Seafood Night – think crispy hake and chips, and mouth-watering calamari – just the most perfect meals for a holiday at the seaside!) Fridays are family-favourite Pizza Nights, and the Langebaan Country Estate’s Sunday Roast lunches are legendary. In between Horizon restaurant serves delicious, affordable meals everyone will love. (Inside tip: the breakfasts offer astonishingly good value: order the Birdie and you get two fried eggs, two rashers of bacon, two slices of toast and unlimited coffee, tea or juice for just R45!)
For a change in dining scenery, try the new Range café at the Estate’s driving range (great, healthy options) and Blaze Bar’s light meals and snacks. Or discover the other great options nearby. A short drive takes you to the eateries of Paternoster. Drive a little further and an evening with Evita Bezuidenhout or Pieter Dirk Uys is just 40 minutes away! (And don’t forget that the award-winning wines of the West Coast and Swartland wine routes are between 30 minutes (Darling) and 90 minutes (Riebeeck Valley) away by car.)
Keep the kids occupied and learning with a visit to the West Coast Fossil Park or Khwa ttu (learn about the San culture). Take them to the Ostrich Show Farm, the Mamre Moravian Mission Station, try birding or small-game spotting …
What is there to do in Langebaan? A better question would be: what isn’t there to do in Langebaan.
See you there!
