Open-Air Teetuin at Bosjes

For those who take the scenic drive through the beautiful Breedekloof valley to BOSJES, the rewards are simple: space to breathe out and enjoy the natural beauty of the landscaped gardens on this family owned protea and fruit farm. Paths wind through plant- and tree-filled, themed areas to a natural amphitheater where an open-air TeeTuin, or tea garden, now offers a menu of delicious, home-baked sweet and savoury treats to enjoy with tea, coffee or cold refreshments. The informal tea garden is the logical starting point or conclusion to a meditative wander through the thoughtfully landscaped gardens whether you’re visiting for a few hours or spending the night on the farm.

Prepared daily under the watchful eye of BOSJES’ executive chef Kim Cox, the tea garden’s menu includes carrot cake with cream cheese frosting; homemade scones with jam and cream; chocolate éclairs; oatmeal and raisin cookies; muffins; and meringues. On summer days, the chef’s signature vanilla ice cream, served in a sugar cone or with a chocolate brownie, and decadent peanut butter and caramel popcorn milkshake are bound to be popular orders. On the savoury side, choose from quiche or pie served with a side salad, or a gourmet sandwich filled with roasted vegetables, mozzarella and basil pesto.

Framed between the Witzenberg and Slanghoek mountains, the focal point of BOSJES is the iconic, glass-walled BOSJES Kapel, or chapel, by architect Coetzee Steyn. The surrounding gardens were designed to inspire contemplation and peace, and many of the diverse plants and trees are imbued with biblical symbolism. One of the paths winds, labyrinth style, to the top of a low hill from where the intricate layout of the gardens can be fully appreciated.

For something more substantial, the farm’s restaurant BOSJES Kombuis is open for lunch. Like the chapel, it was designed by Coetzee Steyn. High ceilings and glass walls allow for unimpeded mountain views and a playful artwork by Leanie van der Vyver is a unique playground for children dotted with electric-blue klipspringer buck.

Whether for an impromptu morning coffee or afternoon gathering with family to celebrate a birthday, the TeeTuin is a truly relaxed setting with country hospitality to match.

The TeeTuin is open between 10h00 and 16h00, from Wednesday to Sunday, weather permitting. For further enquiries, call (27) (23) 004 0496.  For more information about weddings and functions at Bosjes, visit www.bosjes.co.za
