dog-friendly beaches

For any dog lover, there’s nothing quite as pleasurable as seeing your pet running full tilt down the beach with ears blown straight back, tongue rippling frantically in the wind and that crazed look of wild delight on their furry faces. Big or small, there’s hardly a pooch on the planet that doesn’t love a visit to the beach, but not all beaches are created equal (nor do they all welcome animals). The following is a list of Cape Town’s most dog-friendly beaches where leashes are optional, the curfews non-existent, and the fun mandatory in all seasons.

Hout Bay Beach

A gently scalloped bay with shelly stretches of white sand on which to run amok, Hout Bay beach is open to dogs all year around, although, in high season, dogs off leash are restricted to the beach’s mid-section away from Mariner’s Wharf on the one end and the more populous beach section (near the start of Chapman’s Peak Drive) on the other.

Clifton 1st

All four of Clifton’s small beaches have spectacular views out over the Atlantic Ocean and, with their soft white sand and sheltering from the wind, are perennial favourites for sunset watching (weather permitting). Clifton 1st is the only beach there that allows dogs at all (off leashes, too), making this one the go-to place for after-work walks, playtime, and pet bonding.

Beta Beach in Bakoven

Bakoven’s Beta beach may be small, but it is also a tranquil and secluded space where people can bring their dogs for some playtime. It’s adored for being far quieter than its more popular (and populous) neighbours, Camps Bay and Clifton, and has stunning views of Lion’s Head and the 12 Apostles mountain range.

Long Beach, Kommetjie

Kommetjie’s Long beach consists of (literally) kilometres of wide-open beach, upon which gentle surf breaks, making this one of Cape Town’s best spots for dog owners. With this much space, dogs can run wild and get a thorough workout, which you can either join in on or lay back for a little R&R on the powdery white sand.

Sunset Beach, Blaauwberg

Sunset beach has long been a popular destination for surfers, wind surfers, and kite surfers. Now, with no restrictions for dog-owners, it’s also a popular place to take the pooch for a walk. The sand is sugary and white and loaded with shells and polished pebbles. Sunset beach also boasts gorgeous views of Table Mountain, Robben Island, and its namesake: the sunset!

Dolphin Beach, Table View

Dolphin beach in Table View is another fantastic destination for dog lovers. With its long, wide open stretches, stunning views, and convenient proximity to dog-friendly restaurants and pubs, you can expect to join the masses of like-minded people on weekends and after work during the week. The summertime southeasterly winds can make a beach visit somewhat unpleasant, so keep an eye on the forecast before you head out.

Froggy Pond, Simon’s Town

Froggy Pond is a small False Bay beach that, thanks to being sheltered from the pounding surf and wind, has become known and loved as a swimming beach. Here, you’re allowed to let your dog run free and perhaps even take a dip with you!

Mouille Point Beach

Also known as Granger Bay beach, Mouille Point beach is quiet, easily accessed, has loads of parking, and offers the usual stunning views across the Atlantic Ocean to Robben Island. There are plenty of benches to relax on, open spaces for the pooch to play and run around on, and, for the more adventurous of spirit, rock pools to explore. Afterwards, you can spoil the family with some ice cream from one of the Gelato shops close by.

Witsands Beach, Melkbosstrand

Witsands beach in Melkbosstrand offers dog owners vast stretches of fine sand – the perfect beach to go for long walks on. The water here is cold, and the waves can be impressive, but you’ll almost always see people and their pets splashing in the surf. The area also features plenty of dog-friendly restaurants, where you can get some water for your pooch and, for yourself, a refreshing beverage.

Mostertsbaai, Strand

Mostertsbaai in Strand is a great beach for the whole family. Not only are dogs allowed, but it’s also a great fishing spot, is safe for swimming, and has a rocky shoreline with plenty of rock pools for the kids to explore.

Other dog-friendly beaches in Cape Town

The Catch: Dogs are only allowed here before 9am and after 6pm between the months of November and April:

Big Bay, Tableview

Blaauwberg, Bloubergstrand

Camps Bay

Llandudno

Milnerton, at the lighthouse

Milnerton Lagoon

Saunders Rock, both the tidal pool and the beach

Three Anchor Bay

Sunrise beach

Mnandi, Mitchell’s Plain

There are plenty of dog-friendly beaches in Cape Town but each and every one of them has unique restrictions so it is advisable that you check them out beforehand. If you don’t want to end up with a hefty fine or some seriously filthy looks from other beach goers, you should also familiarize yourself with the rules for basic beach etiquette, the most important being: pick up after your pooch; and if your dog isn’t social its always best to keep him/her on a leash (regardless of if it’s an off-leash beach or not)!
