In our latest issue we spotlight three contemporary, Cape Town-based artists, who are well-positioned to rise to new heights this year. Watch this space.
What started out as an experiment in mixing media, became the indelible core of Anastasia Sarantinou’s work. Born in Bloemfontein in 1965, Anastasia pursued art studies, majoring in printmaking and specialising in silk screening.
With photography, column writing and Chairman of the South African Arts Association under her belt, she moved to Cape Town to become a full-time artist, and now works from a Muizenberg studio where she teaches and makes art.
Influenced by her printmaking background Anastasia experiments with different materials which have become the core of her work – to create layers and interest. The artist draws on her everyday life for the subject matter of her works; a contemporary mix of seascapes, still life and portraits. Sarantinou’s tenacity has taken her places, including Germany and Holland, where she has sold many of her works to overseas art lovers. About her paintings, she says “the entire process is just as satisfying as the outcome.”
